In August of 1999 the people
of East Timor voted by over 75% to gain their independence
from Indonesia. As soon as the election results were
made public large numbers of pro-jakarta militia soon
went on a rampage. The TNI (Indonesian Military) stood
by and did nothing. The Australian government took
the initiative to send in soldiers to rescue the local
population and make sure that East Timor would one
day be free.
Bruce and Nicole both joined
the Australian Defence Forces that were deployed to
East Timor as a part of Interfet, International Forces
East Timor. Both arrived in East Timor during the
first week of the International Forces deployment
to the soon to be free and independent East Timor.
This site contains a pictorial
history of their time in East Timor and the Interfet
Forces from around the world who went to East Timor
to proctect basic human rights and the right for self
government of the East Timorese.
